Join the Legal team to protect Barclays, its employees, and its brands while ensuring global competitiveness and compliance with legal standards. Your responsibilities will include risk mitigation, managing strategic transactions, and overseeing business contracts.

Overall purpose of role

  • Oversight of delivery of Legal services from Pune to other areas of the firm, with a particular focus on Markets Legal, which includes the following functions
    • The provision of legal risk management and support to the Markets businesses, across Equities, Liquid Financing, Fixed Income, Credit, Securitised Products, and Distribution.
    • The provision of SME product knowledge support to Investment Banking’s Risk Solutions Group business.
    • Responsibility for the negotiation and execution of master trading documentation for Barclays’ client-facing Markets business.
  • Leadership for Legal colleagues present in Pune (and NOIDA) to create a non-silo’d community which is connected and integrated with both the rest of the Legal function and the broader sites.
  • Build and supervise new Centre of Excellence teams in India, establishing new services and capabilities locally that align and support the Legal’s strategic goals. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Site Lead
    • Supervise Legal colleagues at the site, providing pastoral care and acting as a local supervisor for teams outside their practice area, working closely with the respective people leader.
    • Assist with development of the recruitment strategy in partnership with LExCo and Legal Transformation, aligning talent acquisition efforts with strategic objectives. Oversee local recruitment, onboarding and induction. (including a buddy system).
    • Establish a developmental and supportive culture, assist with training and development (technical and non-technical areas) where appropriate.
    • Manage and develop relationships with other leads across Legal, both regionally and globally.
    • Manage and develop relationships with the broader Functional, Business and Transaction Cycle representatives at the site.
    • Manage and develop local relationships with appropriate external organisations, including the law societies, charities and local government organisations.
    • Support the management of local relationships with panel firms and ALSPs, in partnership with External Engagement, where possible.
    • Lead the local Communication and Colleague Engagement agenda, including Town Halls and social activities. Assist with the co-ordination of site visits (e.g. LExCo members)
    • Champion local Diversity and Inclusion, Citizenship, and Recognition initiatives.
    • Oversee the required seating and the office set up, in partnership with Legal Transformation.
    • Oversee local resilience planning.

  • Legal Services Delivery Lead
    • Lead the BBPLC Legal team based in Pune, which includes the following responsibilities:
    • Build and supervise a team in Pune providing global Structured Notes pricing supplement drafting support
    • Build and supervise the team of negotiators in Pune, which is responsible for :
    • Drafting, negotiating and executing contract documentation with an assigned portfolio of Barclays counterparties (e.g. ISDA Master Agreement and Credit Support Agreements, Global Master Repurchase Agreement, Global Master Securities Lending Agreement, Futures Agreement and any ancillary agreements)
    • Providing Executions Teams support to the global GCS team and other internal stakeholders by (1) reviewing final agreements for completeness, (2) extracting relevant legal and business data points; and (3) storing legal documents in Barclays’ central document repository.
    • Performing capacity and authority checks for counterparties entering into master documentation
    • Build and supervise new Centre of Excellence teams in India, establishing new services and capabilities locally that align and support the Legal’s strategic goals. 
    • Enable a high performance culture, in line with Barclays’s Consistently Excellent standard
    • Set the standard of and assume accountability for performance required to achieve the organisation’s future goals and priorities;
    • Empower team members to take effective risk management decisions;
    • Promote collaboration and effective knowledge sharing across the legal team as well as other areas of the bank. This includes delivery of training for lawyers, business units, and other infrastructure areas on relevant legal risks and issues;
    • Promote the development of talent within the Legal team based in Pune;
    • Ensure that Barclays complies with laws, rules, and regulations (LRR) applicable to the firm, and that the risks to Barclays, clients, and customers are appropriately mitigated. 
    • Ensure that Legal colleagues operate in line with the “Role of a Barclays Lawyer”
    • Ensure that emerging legal risks are appropriately identified and communicated to internal stakeholders, and that internal standards for timely reporting and escalation of matters are in place.  
    • Promote a culture of accountability and discipline on cost.
    • Drive continuous improvement and innovation.

Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

  • Qualified English lawyer (or equivalent common law jurisdiction)
  • Demonstrable legal risk management and communication skills including experience with managing multiple stakeholders in the context of complex transactions and be a pro-active team player.

Desirable skills/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a large financial institution
  • Genuine interest in this area of the law and has exposure to topical developments in regulatory changes and derivatives throughout Asia.

Purpose of the role

To ensure that the operations in the country or region are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and to help the bank manage legal and reputational risks associated with these activities. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
  • Legal advice and support to the bank's country coverage teams on a wide range of legal issues, including regulatory compliance, risk management, project management and transactional matters.
  • Representation of the bank in legal proceedings related to its operations in the country or region, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory investigations.
  • Creation and review of legal documents such as loan agreements, security documents, and other financing documents to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank's operations in the country or region.
  • Developing and delivering training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to the bank's operations in the country or region.
  • Pro-active identification, communication, and provision of legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs). Keeping up to date with regards to changes to LRRs in the relevant coverage area. Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.

  • To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide..
  • They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions..
  • Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  • Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  • Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  • Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  • Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  • Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  • Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  • Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  • Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  • Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  • Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
