Barclays Corporate Affairs

Corporate Affairs ensures effective management of Barclays’ public image, communications, policies, and regulatory relationships. This includes overseeing corporate governance, driving corporate communications, managing policy and advocacy efforts.

Based in London, this external communications professional will be a key member of the Investment Bank (IB) External Communications team, working within the team responsible for creating high-quality communications strategies for the IB. They will support the execution of media plans across the IB which includes Investment Banking, Global Markets and Research businesses.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborate and execute on a comprehensive external communications plan which aligns to the commercial, strategic, and client plans of the business
  • Plan and support on global media strategies for the Investment Banking, Global Markets and Research businesses through partnership with a global team and with key editors, columnists, and influencers at top-tier financial news outlets
  • Assist in the execution of our IB spokesperson strategy to ensure they can speak about a broad range of topics and strategies
  • Work alongside senior leaders in PP&CR to help explain externally the importance of the UK as a liquidity centre for global clients to access the markets and connect innovation/talent and funding
  • Serve as the global external communications lead for International Corporate Banking, partnering closely with IB brand and marketing
  • Assist with global IB awards processes, including helping with the pitch procedure
  • Attend and facilitate media meetings with business spokespeople
  • Collaborate and build relationships with broader Barclays Corporate Communications teams, sharing best practice, learning about the different areas of the business, and developing coordinated communication campaigns
  • Support on monitoring, measurement, and evaluation of CIB media activity
  • Monitor and evaluate media coverage relating to the Investment Banking, Global Markets and Research businesses
  • Assist with quarterly coverage reports for the business

Essential Skills:

  • B.S. or B.A. in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, English, Economics, or a closely related field
  • Interest in financial services and ability to understand technical subjects
  • Strong working knowledge of UK national, regional and trade media, and of European media
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, planning and time management skills
  • Strong relationships with key journalists covering investment banking/markets
  • Proven relationships with senior leader leaders in the investment banking business of a comparable institution
  • Demonstrate ability to work as an organized communicator who sets goals, multitasks, problem solves, tracks projects, meets deadlines, collaborates, and contributes to overall Barclays Communications objectives

Purpose of the role

To communicate execution of the bank’s strategy and objectives effectively to the relevant external stakeholders. 

Accountabilities

  • Delivery and execution of the bank’s external communications strategy so that messages are communicated effectively to the relevant stakeholders across multiple channels, both owned and earned.
  • Development of strategy aligned campaigning/ tactical content/ news flow that clearly and effectively communicates the banks values, goals and objectives to the public.
  • Maintenance of external stakeholder relationships, such as media outlets and industry groups, so that messages communicated through press releases, owned channels and media statements correctly demonstrate the   bank’s strategy values and reputation.
  • Reputational risk minimisation and management for the Bank and its senior leadership through effective advice of risk mitigation, and effective management of negative news flow/ crisis issues.

  • Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross functional areas of impact and alignment.
  • Manage and mitigate risks through assessment, in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Demonstrate leadership and accountability for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work your team does.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the organisation functions to contribute to achieving the goals of the business.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategies.
  • Create solutions based on sophisticated analytical thought comparing and selecting complex alternatives. In-depth analysis with interpretative thinking will be required to define problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Adopt and include the outcomes of extensive research in problem solving processes.
  • Seek out, build and maintain trusting relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders in order to accomplish key business objectives, using influencing and negotiating skills to achieve outcomes.
