As part of the Finance team, you'll help shape Barclays' financial strategy through accounting, budgeting, financial forecasting, and analysis. Your expertise will support management, cash and debt management, and insurance, driving the financial health and success of the organisation.

As a Tax Manager you’ll support the delivery of BPL's tax strategy, compliance, governance and advisory activities across corporation tax, VAT, employment taxes and other relevant tax matters. The role acts as a key partner to Finance, Product, Technology, Operations and Legal teams, helping to identify and manage tax risks while supporting business growth, transformation and new product development. The successful candidate will combine strong technical tax knowledge with a practical and commercial mindset, ensuring tax considerations are embedded into business decisions and operational processes.

Day-to-Day Accountabilities

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Coordinate with Finance, Group Tax and external advisers to ensure accurate and timely tax filings.
  • Support tax authority enquiries, audits and information requests.

Tax Advisory

  • Provide tax guidance on new products, commercial arrangements, contracts, pricing structures and business initiatives.
  • Assess operational processes and business changes to identify tax implications, risks and planning opportunities.
  • Support tax matters relating to restructurings, acquisitions, transfer pricing, R&D incentives and strategic projects.

Employment Taxes

  • Support employment tax matters including PAYE, PSA, STBV, international assignments and cross-border working.
  • Partner with HR, Payroll and advisers to manage employment tax risks relating to remote working, secondments, business travel and employee mobility.

Risk & Governance

  • Maintain tax risk registers and support the operation of tax controls and governance frameworks.
  • Drive process improvements, automation initiatives and robust documentation to support compliance and technical tax positions.

Barclays’ payments acceptance business provides critical infrastructure to the UK economy, processing billions of pounds of payments annually for both small businesses and domestic and international corporate clients.

In April 2025, we announced a long-term partnership with Brookfield Asset Management to grow and transform the payments acceptance business by broadening the range of services offered, enhancing the experience for both existing and prospective clients. Leveraging extensive client relationships and deep experience of UK payments, we will create an environment of continuous innovation - activated by Brookfield’s global private equity expertise in payments, technology, operational transformation and corporate carve-outs - to ensure the business is strategically positioned for long-term growth.

Barclays will invest approximately £400m in the new business, the majority of which will be incurred during the first three years. Performance-linked incentives will drive greater alignment between the partners, underpinning the long-term commitment to the transformation. Barclays and Brookfield will work to create a standalone entity over time, continuing to use the Barclaycard Payments (BPL) brand and acting as the sole payments acceptance services provider to Barclays’ clients for a minimum of ten years.

To be successful as a Tax Manager, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Professional tax qualification (ACA, ACCA, CTA or equivalent).
  • Strong experience in UK corporation tax, VAT and/or employment taxes.
  • Experience working within financial services, payments, fintech, banking or a similarly regulated environment.
  • Ability to interpret technical tax legislation and apply it to commercial situations.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • Experience within payments, acquiring, card or fintech businesses.
  • Knowledge of transfer pricing principles.
  • Experience with R&D tax incentives and Patent Box.
  • Understanding of international tax and withholding tax issues.
  • Experience of Oracle related transformation, tax technology, workflow automation and process improvement.
  • Exposure to tax aspects of legal entity restructurings, outsourcing arrangements and operating model changes.

You may be assessed on key critical skills relevant for success in role, such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking and digital and technology, as well as job-specific technical skills.

Purpose of the role

To safeguard the financial interests of the bank, using expertise and diligence to maintain tax compliance, mitigate tax risks and ensure tax is appropriately reflected in the Group’s financial planning and external financial reporting.    

Accountabilities

  • Preparation or review of relevant tax returns in accordance with applicable tax law and agreeing compliance positions with the tax authorities.
  • Preparation or review of tax accounting calculations and disclosures in accordance with applicable accounting standards for group forecasting, reporting and stress testing.
  • Provision of technical insight, analysis and conclusions on a variety of tax technical areas to determine appropriate tax treatment.
  • Analysis of relevant developments in tax law to ensure the impact on Barclays is understood and appropriately managed.
  • Design and operation of tax process controls to ensure tax risk is appropriately managed and tax treatments can be supported.

  • Identify ways to mitigate risk and developing new policies/procedures in support of the control and governance agenda.
  • Take ownership for managing risk and strengthening controls in relation to the work done.
  • Perform work that is closely related to that of other areas, which requires understanding of how areas coordinate and contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the organisation sub-function.
  • Collaborate with other areas of work, for business aligned support areas to keep up to speed with business activity and the business strategy.
  • Engage in complex analysis of data from multiple sources of information, internal and external sources such as procedures and practises (in other areas, teams, companies, etc).to solve problems creatively and effectively.
  • Communicate complex information. 'Complex' information could include sensitive information or information that is difficult to communicate because of its content or its audience.
  • Influence or convince stakeholders to achieve outcomes.
