You’ll have the opportunity to rotate across multiple areas within Risk, including credit, market, operational, climate and treasury, gaining deep knowledge of your area and its importance to the bank.

You’ll be great at communicating and collaborating – motivated by pace and pressure and driven to achieve and search for the best solution. What to expect

Capital Markets is organised into several specialist areas covering equity and debt origination, loans, structuring, risk management and syndication. The opportunities and challenges in this part of our business come thick and fast – and in all shapes and sizes. No matter which area you intern in, you’ll learn from the best in the business, immerse yourself in our culture, and be involved in real projects. Here are our core businness units that you might have the chance of experiencing:

Debt Capital Markets
This division collaborates with investment-grade rated companies to facilitate primary debt raising. As a graduate, you'll partner with our seasoned experts to craft and organize fixed income securities, subsequently promoting them to potential investors. In addition to various responsibilities, this debt plays a vital role in funding acquisitions, capital outlays, and the refinancing of bonds or other fixed-maturity debt securities.

Global Finance Advisory
This group employs an analytical approach to address conventional corporate finance inquiries. As a graduate, you will delve into areas including cash allocation, capital structure management, and the mitigation of financial risks within companies.

Equity Capital Markets
This team provides guidance to corporations, institutions, and governments regarding a variety of products aimed at raising equity capital, monetizing positions, and managing ownership interests. As a graduate, you will play a role in structuring and implementing equity and equity-linked transactions.

Leveraged Finance
You’ll join a team that generates funding for companies that already have a considerable amount of debt. And because the funding is riskier, it’s also more costly, resulting in capital structures relying on a higher degree of financial leverage. As part of this team, you’ll provide clients with appropriate advice on how to manage existing capital structures in an ever-changing market environment and collaborate with Coverage and Credit Risk teams to carry out analysis that will support Barclay’s underwriting decision-making.

The Barclays Way

This is the spirit of Barclays. It’s why we exist, what we believe and how we behave. But most importantly, it’s how we make decisions, take action and get things done.

Purpose

Our role in society is defined in our Purpose. It provides a clear expression of why what we do matters, and our drive to deliver for our customers, clients and communities.

Our new purpose is:

Working together for a better financial future.

Values

If our Purpose is why we exist, our five Values are our moral compass: they are the fundamentals of who we are, and what we believe is right.

Mindset

The power of who we are is greatest when we are bound together by a common Purpose, shared Values – and a single Mindset, which shapes how we get things done, always with our customers and clients at the heart of what we do.

Question whether things can be improved, simplified and/or automated. Be curious and ambitious; challenge the status quo. Speak up and listen up. Be open to alternative viewpoints. Use insights based on data to inform decisions. Deeply understand client and customer needs to develop long term relationships.

Act like an owner. Take personal responsibility and accountability. Operate with precision to deliver high quality work efficiently. Manage risks proactively. Champion change and actively support transformation. Be prepared to adapt. Collaborate across Barclays to get things done. Focus on outcomes that deliver sustainable value to our clients, customers, shareholders and communities.

Trust, support and inspire each other to deliver. Promote a culture of inclusion and leverage diverse perspectives. Celebrate success. Learn from failure and use it to continuously improve. Know what decisions you can take and make them. Address issues or problems you encounter, and raise those outside your remit.

Who’s this programme for?

The Barclays Discovery Diversity Programme is open to all students who are 2 years out from graduation. It’s an opportunity to explore the wide-ranging internship opportunities we offer, and secure a place on one of them. We target these opportunities particularly at key underrepresented groups in each of the regions where we run internship programmes.

The internships cover all kinds of roles and skills, so it doesn’t matter what degree you’re taking. For example, we offer a whole range of technology-focused programmes – so if you are an aspiring developer or an expert coder, you’ll discover a our technical opportunities.

For a long time, the conversation was focused on gender, but since Black Lives Matter we’ve been talking a lot more about race. Our Race at Work Charter gives us a clear way forward and we’re hiring a lot more diverse talent in Risk.

I majored in Organisation Theory and I was keen to put what I had learnt to use in a Banking environment. As I explored the cultures and offerings from different Banks, Barclays really stood out as the place that could provide everything I was looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barclays’ business language is English, so you must speak English fluently no matter which role and region you apply to. It's not always necessary to speak the local language of the office you are applying to, although for client facing roles (e.g. Sales, Banking, Research), native fluency in the local language is very important.

Absolutely not. There are people here from all kinds of degree disciplines. When it comes to applications, we’re more interested in who you are than what you’ve studied. That said, certain roles do require a more technical degree. You’ll find further information about our requirements on each of the programme pages.

We do not offer Summer Internships for first year undergraduate students. However, we encourage you to check out and apply for our Insight Opportunities for first and second-year students. Please visit our Insight Events page for more information.

If you are pursuing or have an MBA, Masters or PhD degree, you may still be eligible to apply to our internship and graduate programmes. Certain business areas offer Associate level placements, which are dedicated to students pursuing an MBA, Masters or PhD degree. If applying to Analyst level roles, your post graduate qualifications will not qualify you for additional benefits or responsibilities should you be offered a role. Please see our programme pages for more information.

In many cases we will reimburse you for travel costs related to events or interviews per our travel policy. We’ll send you the policy and reimbursement information with your event or interview invitation. If you have questions, check with your recruiter.

Unfortunately, we can't visit every campus. If we don’t visit your college or university, you can still apply and be considered. All applications we receive are considered against the same criteria. Note that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so it pays to apply early.

Only in exceptional circumstances do we defer offers. You should only submit an application if you plan to be able to start in the year specified.

We run a structured internship programme for university students during the summer. Beyond this, some business areas and locations offer off-cycle internships which last up to 6 months, as well as a number of ad-hoc insight events that last one to two days. Please visit our opportunities and events pages for more information.

For open vacancies, we recruit on a rolling basis and fill on a first come first served basis, so we recommend applying early. If we recruit on your campus, check with your career advisor’s office for any applicable application deadlines. If we don’t recruit on your campus, review the respective opportunity pages for any application deadlines.

With the exception of our off-cycle internships, offered in certain locations, which offer flexible start dates, all of our programmes have fixed start dates. You will be informed of your start date in the months leading up to your programme.

Rewards and benefits are country-dependent and your recruiter will discuss our competitive package at the point of offer. Please note our package is non-negotiable for internship and graduate opportunity hires.

The majority of our internship opportunities commence in June. If you are applying for an off-cycle internship, the date would be agreed based on your availability and business requirements. Most full-time graduate opportunities will begin in August or September; however, in some cases we can accommodate early starts for individuals graduating early.

We offer a number of different opportunities, all which vary in length. Typically, we offer the following:

  • Insight Events: 1-2 days
  • Summer Internships: 6-9 weeks
  • Off-Cycle Internships: up to 9 months
  • Full-time Graduate opportunities: 1-2 years on programme, followed by roll-off into a permanent role

Analyst level roles are appropriate for those studying toward a Bachelors or Masters degree. Associate level roles are appropriate either for those with significant work experience who are now studying toward an MBA, or for PhD degree seekers.

Absolutely. Many of our programs support study for a recognized professional qualification where relevant.

UK programmes: Barclays will ask you about your right to work/work authorisation status during the internship/graduate/full-time analyst recruitment process. Candidates who do not have a current right to work in the UK, or who will require visa sponsorship from Barclays are not precluded from applying to internship and graduate opportunities. However, Barclays may take your work authorisation status into consideration depending on the availability of candidates with the right to work in the UK.

Americas and APAC programmes: To participate in an internship or pre-internship program, you must have the legal right to work in the location to which you will be assigned for the duration of the internship. If you are joining Barclays in a full-time position and you need a work permit, we apply on your behalf. However, you should be aware that the granting of work permits is beyond Barclays’ control and subject to local immigration laws.

You can only apply to one full-time graduate or internship role globally each year. We encourage you to research the opportunities available so you can make the right decision during the application process. If you submit multiple applications, only your first application will be considered.

Yes, we'll simply arrange for telephone or virtual interviews. Any relevant application deadlines still apply to you, regardless of where you are studying at the time. If Barclays recruits on your home campus, be sure to submit your application by the deadline (if applicable) shown in your school’s career system. If we don’t recruit on your campus, simply apply by the deadline shown on the programme page of our careers site. If no deadline is specified, we are likely recruiting on a rolling basis, however, early application is highly recommended.

We accept one application per candidate per year for our graduate and internship programmes. If you have previously applied to us during this season and been unsuccessful, you can reapply once the next recruitment season begins. At that time, you’ll be asked to include details of any previous applications. If you’re interested in a role at Barclays that isn’t a full-time graduate or internship programme, you may apply at any time.

Barclays is committed to Equal Opportunity Employment. As part of that, we will make reasonable adjustments to the selection process wherever it's necessary. If you think you have a disability that may impact your performance anywhere in the selection process, please contact a recruiter to discuss your personal circumstances. There is also a section on the application form where you can tell us if you need special adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process.

Apprenticeship Frequently Asked Questions

Unfortunately not. We recommend that you research your potential journey to work, to make sure it’s something you could do regularly.

Our programmes offer a competitive starting salary on a permanent contract.

Our roles are open to anyone over the age of 16 in the UK and anyone over 18 for the rest of the world.

We recruit throughout the year, and we aim to offer assessments as soon as possible to anyone who gets shortlisted for an opportunity. If successful, we’ll work with you to agree a start date that starts your Barclays career as soon as possible.

It won’t be as hard as you might think. You’ll be supported by your Talent Coach who will keep in touch either at work or remotely every few weeks. You’ll also be able to manage your studies online, through a virtual-learning programme which you can access at home and at work, so you can study in whatever way suits you.

It depends which programme you take and how quickly you complete all the academic requirements. Our Foundation programmes tend to last around 2 years, whilst our Higher programmes can last over 4 years.

We have opportunities available in Technology, Operations, Compliance, Finance, Internal Audit, Risk, UX Design and Equity Research. You will be placed in a role within your chosen business area.

It all depends on what programme and business area you are applying for. Visit our Apprenticeship programme page to see whether you’d be best suited to a Foundation or Higher apprenticeship and then have a look at what business areas you could go into. Each programme has different entry requirements so there is something to suit most candidates.

We have opportunities across the UK, from our contact centres to our dedicated campuses to our Head Office in London. We’ll discuss locations with you during the registration and application stages.

Yes, providing you pass your probation period and apprenticeship qualifications, and are performing at the right standard.

More about working at Barclays

Barclays’ pay and benefits package is designed to reward our employees for their drive, commitment and exceptional service.

Flexibility and choice to create a benefits package that’s individual to you.

Start with a competitive salary, pension/retirement fund, discretionary annual bonus, life assurance and income protection cover. Employees can also take advantage of a wide choice of voluntary benefits, with discounts and tax advantages on many of them.

We offer a competitive holiday allowance, depending on where you work and how long you’ve been working for Barclays.

As a Barclays colleague, you can look forward to plenty of challenges and opportunities, and the chance to develop both professionally and personally. We give Barclays colleagues plenty of opportunities to learn and move your career forward. If you’re just starting out, we can offer you a structured career progression plan, job rotations and international work placements.

Citizenship is an important part of the way we do business. We play a broader role in society, using our business expertise and the skills of our colleagues.

As a Barclays colleague, you could support our shared goal to help people develop the vital enterprise, employability and financial skills they need to help them achieve their ambitions, or help with other causes that are important to you.

We contribute to social change and economic growth. We’ve developed innovative products and services that serve our community – for example, the first Women in Leadership Index in our industry and the first way for British Sign Language users to contact a bank without visiting a branch.

We’ve also created thousands of employment opportunities through our apprenticeship schemes and our programme for ex-military personnel, as well as helping millions of young people build the enterprise, employability and financial skills they need to achieve their ambitions.

Our people have volunteered hundreds of thousands of hours and raised millions for causes they care about. These successes were built on thousands of individual achievements and the hard work, vision and dedication of our colleagues.

We actively encourage Barclays colleagues to give their time, money and skills to work that brings positive social and business results, so we support their volunteering and fundraising efforts.

We’re excited to be taking the next steps in our citizenship journey.

When we feel good, we have the energy and focus to support each other, our customers and clients, and the communities in which we live and work.

This is why Barclays is committed to giving you the tools and support to help you be your best – however you define it, it’s about understanding your own wellbeing and doing what works for you.

We have a wide range of comprehensive resources to support you: this includes information on nutrition, resilience, mental and emotional wellbeing, financial security, healthy working and social and family time – all the wellbeing support you need in one place.

There are sports and social clubs that enable you to meet new people and pursue your passions with likeminded colleagues.

Empowering you to be mentally fit

Barclays’ ambition is to break down the stigma surrounding mental ill health and to create an environment where colleagues are proactively supported to look after their mental wellbeing, getting support where needed, so that they are able to perform at their best.

Much like physical fitness, our mental fitness varies throughout our lives and is something we have to work at. Barclays is committed to continue being a mental health confident organisation. In an increasingly complex and dynamic world, we need tools to understand and manage our most important assets – our minds. At Barclays we equip our colleagues with E-learning tools, practical tips and exercises to help us encourage a positive, growth mindset and build resilience. And we have programmes to provide practical help, counselling and support to you and your family 24/7.

Empowering colleagues to take control of their learning, development and career.

We are committed to investing in our people at all stages of their career to help them develop both in their existing role and future career, and our strategy is to provide colleagues with a balance of digital learning, workshops and great on-the-job development experiences.

We’ve built Learning Lab, the entry point for all learning at Barclays. Learning Lab provides a modern learning experience for all colleagues’ regardless of location or level.

Colleagues can go on a personalized learning journey that includes best in class digital content, as well as accessible, anywhere, anytime learning and development opportunities designed to support them in the jobs they do today and help them prepare for future opportunities. This learning, available in a variety of forms, aims to develop their technical job specific skills, personal skills, and leadership skills.

Barclays also encourages colleagues to study for degree programmes and professional qualifications that benefit the business and support their development.

The Barclays Leadership Framework provides a definition and expectation of leaders at Barclays to help colleagues plan their own leadership development, driven by our core belief that quality leadership makes a difference to our success.

The framework is used across all levels of leadership – from new line managers, all the way through to our Group Executive Committee, supported by a variety of manager and leadership development training opportunities.

We believe that a diverse, inclusive and engaged culture is vital; that everyone’s value should be recognised and celebrated; and that every colleague has the same opportunity to fulfil their career potential.

Our Networks focus on five global diversity agendas: Disability, Gender, LGBT, Multicultural and Multigenerational. Each has its own dynamic network of colleagues who are dedicated to promoting, championing and supporting these agendas.

Barclays is an employer committed to recruiting and supporting people with a disability or mental health condition and we are proud to have been awarded Disability Confident Leader status by the UK Government’s Department of Work and Pensions.

Mind

As one of the first organisations to sign up to the Mental Health at Work commitment, we have a range of initiatives in place. These are managed through our dedicated Wellbeing team who ensure colleagues have access to informative and up-to-date resources. We are committed to upskilling colleagues to protect and enhance their mental fitness and resilience, on how to spot signs of mental ill-health and to build their confidence in appropriate ways to support others.

Barclays can provide support for those with a disability, impairment, health concern or mental health condition in the workplace. These adjustments can be short-term arrangements or more long-term. We encourage everyone working at Barclays, or thinking about joining us, to tell us what support and adjustments they need to be their best at work.

We also believe in equipping people leaders with disability confident training and support, encouraging everyone to feel able to disclose non-visible conditions, and promoting awareness of different disabilities.

Get specialist, confidential support if you have a problem that’s affecting your physical or emotional wellbeing.

You can discover a network where exclusive mindfulness sessions are led by colleagues, for colleagues, across our global network.

Body

Staying fit and healthy is an important part of looking after your wellbeing. That’s why our resources offer advice on making healthy choices on sleep, exercise, nutrition and fitness. We offer a range of resources and benefits to help you feel your best.

We provide health checks to help colleagues better understand their health status, and offer guidance and supportive resources to prevent disease, manage conditions or recover from illness

We’ll help you to be your best at work by offering adjustments, such as removing barriers you might face if you have a disability, impairment, health concern or mental health condition.

Outside of the on-site gym access at several Barclays sites, we provide support with gym benefits as part of the Employee Discount Scheme.

Social

From enjoying opportunities to express ourselves to making new connections, it is important that you feel valued and have a sense of belonging at Barclays. At Barclays you’ll have access to a diverse range of colleague networks and opportunities to make a difference in the communities we serve.

We have 13 Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) aligned to our Diversity. Equity and Inclusion agendas. These aren’t just about finding like-minded colleagues, but also being allies to communities of people so that we can cultivate a more inclusive and supportive culture.

From volunteer days to fundraising, you can make a meaningful impact to the communities we serve by taking part in Citizenship activities.

And if you’re passionate about sports, arts, culture or anything in between, you can join one of our social or sports clubs. These have always been a foundational part of life at Barclays… dating as far back as 1892 when the Barclays Dramatic Society was founded.

A key aspect of financial wellbeing is paying you fairly for the work you do. Fair pay doesn’t just mean paying the right salary – it means awarding the right incentives, providing the right benefits and giving the right support in the workplace as well.

Workplace

We pride ourselves on providing the tools and support so you can bring your whole self to work. We want colleagues to be able to talk openly about any sensitive wellbeing topics, so that they can get the support they need when they need it. We are also working towards accreditation for ISO45003 which is the first global standard for mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. This will help us to support best practice around the mental wellbeing of colleagues.

You’ll be encouraged to look out for others and make that a priority at work. Practical resources are available to help everyone get the best results when working together.

We bring this to life through our wellbeing service and include global speaker events for all colleagues where clinical experts and high-profile professionals (such as Olympic champions) present inspirational guidance.

We provide the opportunity for all our employees, globally to work flexibly – empowering you to work in a way that suits your life as well as enabling us to better service the needs of our customers and clients.

We work closely with our People Leaders to create an environment where health and wellbeing are valued and supported. We offer them dedicated training on practical ways to lead their teams in a way that protects and enhances colleague’s mental and physical health.

“What I appreciate most is that if you are open-minded and recognise opportunities, you never do the same thing at Barclays in any given year. You can always tackle new topics proactively and thus advance yourself and the company. My manager actively supported me here and accompanied my development.”

I started out in the classic way. I studied business administration, then got into management consulting, and joined Barclays as a Business Design Analyst in 2014. I did the Scrum Master [course] and had a lot of fun driving scrum forward for two years. This caught the eye of another department and I was advised to apply to Sales & Quality as a Team Leader. So I got my first team responsibility with 15 employees, with whom I achieved a lot - for us and our customers. My manager and the HR department actively supported me here and accompanied my development.

In addition, while I was working, I completed a two-year course of study and received a scholarship for the Young Women Leadership programme. Human Resources was actively supportive here and I was able to move to the team leader position at Commercial Marketing. I then spent one year leading one of the most important projects at Barclays for the marketing division. Today, I'm a Team Leader in Customer Campaigns.

“My career at Barclays has already been very much defined by my mentality and proactivity. The mix of curiosity to learn new things and the ability to step out of my comfort zone and take advantage of opportunities has defined my career - and Barclays has supported, encouraged and promoted me in this.”

I started at Barclays as a temporary employee in Application Processing in 2002. I liked the company, the work was fun, and a position became available. I applied and took the job. My curiosity for new things at Barclays was piqued – I wanted to grow with the company. I then took the opportunity to move into dunning Customer Service and had my first contact with marketing. And I wanted more. So I went for evening studies in Marketing Communications, plus a marketing internship with Barclays’ support. Setting up and expanding online marketing sales became my passion.

Being actively involved and taking on additional responsibility and tasks helped me make it to the manager level. With renewed motivation, I added a Business Administration degree and a bachelor's degree to achieve my further goals. Now, I work in the COO area with my own team and can shape digital transformation.

“Is it possible to reconcile family and career? At Barclays, I've found the perfect employer. For the past seven years, it's been an ideal fit. I can take care of the family, advance my career at Barclays, and I've even been able to get a second degree on top of that.”

My tasks at Barclays are always an exciting challenge for me. At its core, I deal with the question: How can the bank's earnings potential be increased? Since I studied Business Administration and I’m interested in business processes at banks, the current job is right up my alley. It's all about interest rate adjustments or optimising the product range. I started at Barclays in the change area as a Business Design Analyst in 2013. There I worked with many departments and got to know the system and process infrastructure in detail.

This allowed me to lead many exciting, innovative projects. For example, the digitisation of the application process. In 2014, I moved to Product Management, where I managed exciting projects in the Loans and Deposits department. Five years later I had the opportunity to build a new Product Management team in 'Commercial Optimisation'. We are a great and successful team and are launching many new measures. At Barclays, you can take your development into your own hands and get the appropriate support and encouragement from your line managers. This also allowed me to complete my master's degree at the Open University Hagen in parallel and spend time with my family.

“I’ve been very lucky in my career at Barclays. But I’ve also earned it. If you want to develop, it’s important to think outside the box in your line of work. In my case, that was interdisciplinary exciting projects and that I built up a network across the different departments.”

Coming to Barclays as a trained cook. Sounds unusual. But it’s a fit. After working as a chef, I wanted to study and got a student job in the Fraud department in 2009. I enjoyed that a lot and was fully committed. My team leader, who was in the process of building a new team, asked me if I would like to do more. I did. After a year, the student job turned into a permanent position. Next came a big project where I worked very well with an English colleague.

Then I got another offer from a team leader. Here it was about customer communication in cases of fraud and the whole process documentation. At this job, the Compliance department noticed me and I got the chance to take a job there. I still work here today and take over responsibility for financial crime prevention.

Also Abendstudium Marketingkommunikation plus Marketingpraktikum mit Barclays Unterstützung.
